Who we are

The Eric Liddell Centre is a charity providing specialist caring services from a unique historic building in south central Edinburgh.

Founded in 1980 by local people, all of our trustees live or work in the local community.

Our building was formerly Morningside North parish church and has been extensively modified to meet local community needs.

In 1992 the Centre was renamed the Eric Liddell Centre in memory of the Olympic gold medalist who was portrayed in the film Chariots of Fire. Eric Liddell studied in Edinburgh, lived locally, and had a strong belief in service to his local community.

What we do

We operate a range of caring projects including:
  • A specialist day care service for people with dementia.
  • A project for carers that provides drop-in support plus educational, social and health based courses - recognised by HM Inspectorate of Education as ‘a model of good practice’.

We also provide:
  • Low cost office space for small charities.
  • Rooms for other groups providing activities for children and young people.
You can find out more about our values, mission and history on our about us page.

We make a difference

Our day care service for people with a diagnosis of dementia currently provides 40 places every week for people with high level needs. Our Care Commission registration was ammended in 2009 and is now registered for up to 70 participants every week. This service is crucial to the people that we serve and has enabled beneficiaries to remain in their own homes for up to six years.

The daughter of one of our service users says:

“Day Care Services at the Eric Liddell centre has made a huge difference to my mother’s quality of life. She enjoys the company and outings.
From my point of view the care she receives at the Eric Liddell centre has greatly reduced my stress and worry about my mother. I know that it has meant that my brother and I have been able to continue to care for Mum in her own home.
We are all greatly appreciative of the care and professionalism of the staff. I feel fortunate that Mum has access to such a high quality service.”

Carers who attend our programme for carers testify to the reduction in stress, depression and anxiety that is so common to their caring roles. Here is what some of them say:

“I am more motivated to make some space for ME.”
“An excellent course; felt more relaxed and restored.”
“It has rekindled my desire to keep learning and to keep alive.”

How our work is funded

We receive annual grants from the City of Edinburgh Council and the Community Health Partnership, but these sources make up only 25% of our income and they are unlikely to increase. We are supported by a number of generous charitable trusts and local people. This makes up 35% of our income. We also earn money from the rental of rooms to local organisations but with fuel costs increasing and parking more difficult this has become a less viable way of sustaining our work.
Fundraising Standards Board
We are a member of the Fundraising Standards Board so you can give with confidence knowing that your money will be put to immediate use helping people in our community. In the unlikely event that you have any concerns about our fundraising activities we have a  fundraising complaints procedure.

How you can helpCaring hands.

Providing this level of care and support in the local community is only possible with the support of generous people like you.
  • It costs £95 to provide one day’s care for someone with Dementia.
  • It costs only £1 to provide one day’s support for one carer.

Other ways to help

If you feel you are able to, why not hold your own fundraising event? We are able to help with posters, publicity and general advice. Maybe you would prefer to do a sponsored event, e.g.; head shave, parachute jump, slim or swim to name just a few.

Perhaps you are a member of a local community group, school, church or sports club who would be interested in raising funds for the Eric Liddell Centre? We would be very pleased to hear from you. Please contact us.

You may want to consider leaving a legacy to the Eric Liddell Centre in your will.  Even a small percentage of an estate can leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Your solicitor will be able to advise on how to do this. If you already have a will then adding an additional clause (known as codicil) is simple and inexpensive.
